Request Articles and Books


  • The Library fulfills article and book requests with materials held in the Library or through external libraries (Interlibrary Loans).
  • Requests for service are made via the ILLiad electronic request form.
  • First time users: please have the 14-digit number on your One Card available before you begin the registration process.
  • Books owned by another USM library (University System of MD) will not be borrowed via Interlibrary Loan. See "Borrowing Books from Another USM Library" for information about requesting USMAI books.
  • HS/HSL adheres to copyright laws and guidelines.


  • UMB faculty, staff, students, and UMB affiliates.
  • Non-OCLC and non-Docline libraries may register to use our services via Lending Web by clicking the "First Time Users" link, and make requests from there.

For materials in the Library, requests will be filled within 24 hours. Materials needing to be borrowed from another library may take longer. Please indicate the "Not Wanted After" date in the request.


The Library processes requests Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 4:00.

Submitting your Requests

  • Check CatalogUSMAI to determine if the Library has the journal or book you need. For help using the catalog, Ask Us!
  • Complete an ILLiad request form. Indicate “Not Wanted After” date. Citations should be complete and non-abbreviated.

Arrival/Delivery of Requests

  • Article requests are delivered electronically:
    • Posted to your ILLiad account. You will receive an email notification that it has been posted with a link to access your account. Once you login, the article is in your 'Electronically Received Articles' where it will remain for 30 days. Charges, if applicable, apply whether or not the article is viewed.
    • Emailed to the email address specified in your ILLiad account information.
  • Books will be held at the HS/HSL Circulation desk for pick-up during library hours. You will be notified via e-mail that the book has arrived. Note: you are responsible to return the book to HSHSL on time to avoid charges imposed by the book lender.

Explanation of Selected ILLiad Statuses

Status Definition
Awaiting Copyright Clearance The article requested must be reviewed to determine if any copyright fees need to be paid.
Awaiting Customer Response The request is pending, waiting on your response to questions from Library staff. Please respond promptly to expedite the process.
In DD Stacks Searching This item is available at the HS/HSL and is being retrieved from the stacks.
Request Sent This item is not available at the HS/HSL and has been sent to a lending library for fulfillment. It may take 2-14 days to deliver the item.
Delivered to Web The article is in your ILLiad account now and will stay there for 30 days before it is deleted. Please retrieve it promptly.
Awaiting Overdue Notice Processing The item has been checked out to you and is now overdue. Please return the item promptly to avoid being blocked from ILLiad.
Awaiting Recall Processing The lending library wants their book back immediately, regardless of the due date. Please return the item immediately.
Item Checked In The item you returned has been received by the Library.
