The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) is offering the following workshops free of charge to UMB faculty, staff and students; UMMC staff; VA staff; and HS/HSL Corporate Members during the Spring 2008 semester. For a workshop description, click on the title of the workshop. All workshops will be held in one of the three computer classrooms located on the Lower Level of the library.
African Americans see diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease affecting their friends and families every day. Free online resources from the National Library of Medicine and other reliable sources are available to help. This two hour class will provide participants with some basic health information as well as information specific to the African American community. [Register] Instructor: Mandy Meloy
Up for tenure? Looking to show how influential your research is? Need to know where your work is referenced or who is quoting you? The Cited Reference Search feature in Web of Science's Science Citation Index is a tool that helps answer these questions. Learn to use this resource more effectively. In this workshop we will explore basic features of the CINAHL resource such as subject and keyword searching, available limits and full-text access. This workshop will address copyright issues faced by academic instructors. During the session, you will be exposed to the basics of copyright law and learn when materials can be freely used for educational purposes and when you are required to obtain copyright permission. Learn to create materials that get your health and wellness information across quickly and clearly. Bring some pieces you use or some information you need to be written in an easy-to-read manner. We'll review the disconnect between information providers and information seekers, the success of "plain language" initiatives and the importance of text, type, graphics, space and layout. Evidence-Based Public Health has been defined as the use of current best evidence in making decisions about the health of communities and populations. This workshop will focus on defining clear questions and tips for finding the best evidence using a variety of online resources that address the multidisciplinary nature of public health. Resources covered will expand beyond the traditional journal databases to include locating grey literature from government documents, technical reports and other alternative sources. Google Scholar can be a convenient resource for locating scholarly content. Enhance your Google Scholar search skills by attending this workshop. We will explore the differences between Google and Google Scholar and determine when it is appropriate to use Google Scholar for your research. The instructor will also walk you through how to find articles from Google Scholar using ‘Find It @ HS/HSL,' and how to set preferences on your home computer. Designed for beginning grant proposal writers, this workshop presents a general overview of the grant and funding processes as well as the level of detail required in a successful proposal. Each component of the grant writing process will be addressed, including: documenting the need; identifying the target population; writing measurable objectives; developing a work plan, an evaluation plan and dissemination plan. Attend this MLA-accredited continuing educational course on grant writing and resources to gain insight into grants. Lexis Nexis is a comprehensive, full-text, online resource providing national and international news, business and financial information as well as the text of laws, codes, statutes, rulings and law journal articles. This workshop reviews the principles of evidence-based health care and offers strategies for finding the best clinical evidence. We will cover primary and secondary sources, including the Cochrane Systematic Reviews, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, and other best evidence databases. This one hour workshop is for anyone who would like an overview of MedlinePlus.gov. MedlinePlus.gov brings together authoritative information from the National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Participants will learn how to navigate health topics, drugs and supplements, the encyclopedia with pictures, online tutorials, surgical videos, Go Local, and other unique information of MedlinePlus.gov. Topics covered include finding books available through the library, finding articles on a specific subject, and electronic journal access.[Register]
This workshop will address implications of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access mandate. The mandate, which goes into effect April 2008, requires that NIH-funded investigators make their peer-reviewed final manuscripts available to the public through PubMed Central. During the session, the instructor will address mandate requirements, identify resources available for assistance with compliance, and demonstrate the process for submission of manuscripts into PubMed Central.[Register] Instructors: Debra Berlanstein and Jaime Friel Blanck
This workshop will help you feel comfortable performing basic author and subject searches using the OVID interface. Also highlighted will be features such as Find Citing Articles, Find Similar, and Find Citation. [Register]
This workshop will provide information on how to find descriptions and reviews of tests in the literature. Strategies will be presented on how to locate actual tests and measurements using both electronic and print resources. This workshop will cover the basics of the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database, such as using Medical Subject Headings and locating full text articles. RefWorks is a web-based citation manager that can save you time and ease your workload. RefWorks is now FREE to UMB! Come learn how to take advantage of this valuable program.
