Books and journals articles not owned by the HS/HSL can be obtained from other libraries or document delivery suppliers.
Guidelines
- Requests for service are made via an electronic request form.
- No other forms of request are accepted.
- Books owned by another USM library will not be borrowed via Interlibrary Loan. See "Borrowing Books from Another USM Library" for information about requesting USMAI books.
- If an HS/HSL book or journal is not on the shelf, please complete a Missing Item Search form.
- HS/HSL adheres to copyright laws and guidelines.
Eligibility
- UMB faculty, staff and students who submit an electronic request form. Charges may apply for everyone except UMB students.

Please Note: Search our catalog before requesting an interlibrary loan. If an item you request is held in the HS/HSL collection and you've provided a billing account, we will fill the request and charge you (except UMB Students). If you've indicated an "obtain at no charge" billing option, we will cancel the request.
Hours
- The Library processes requests Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 4:30.
Regular Requests
- Regular requests are processed and sent on to a lending library or supplier within 24 - 48 hours. Once the request leaves the HS/HSL, the time it takes to receive the item is not controlled by us. It may take as little as two days or as long as two weeks, depending on the availability of the item at the lending library and the delivery method used.
- If the "Need by Date" you indicate on your request form is less than two weeks away, the Resource Sharing department will cancel your request and notify you.
Rush Requests
- Rush requests are processed and sent on to a lending library or supplier within 24 hours. Once the request leaves the HS/HSL, the time it takes to receive the item is not controlled by us; it depends on availability factors at the lending organization. We will make every effort to expedite your rush requests.
Submitting your Requests
- Check CatalogUSMAI to determine if the Library has the article or book you need. For help using the online catalog, Ask Us!
- Complete an electronic request form. Please complete one request form for each item needed. To speed your request, make sure the information submitted is complete and accurate. Abbreviations or incomplete information may delay or prevent your request from being processed.
Arrival/Delivery of Requests
- Article requests are delivered electronically:
- Delivered to the Web: the article is posted to your ILLiad account. You will receive an email notification that it has been posted with a link to access your account. Once you login, the article is in your 'View/Download Electronically Received Articles' where it will remain for 14 days. Charges, if applicable, apply whether or not the article is viewed.
- Emailed PDF: The article is attached as a PDF to the email address specified in your ILLiad account information.
- Book requests will be held at the HS/HSL Circulation desk for pick-up during library hours. You will be alerted via e-mail that the book has arrived.
