Binding Your Thesis/Dissertation
|
|
|
You have worked hard to complete your thesis
or dissertation. It is important that it be preserved for the future. The Library
recommends that you do the following to preserve your work and to make it available
to others.
- Use a high quality, permanent paper
for the unbound copies that you submit to the Graduate School.
- These copies are bound by the Library
and become part of its permanent collection. It is important that you
follow the instructions
provided by the Graduate School. (The
library pays for the binding.)
- Paper quality is important. Many
papers are acidic or contain substances that cause them to turn brown
or yellow and become brittle over time. High quality papers are relatively
inexpensive and are readily available. Some
papers are especially recommended for dissertations and theses. For
multiple copies, you might find it more economical to use one of the many
permanent
photocopy papers.
- Take advantage of the archiving
and publishing services offered by UMI/
ProQuest.
- UMI will archive your dissertation
by both microfilming it and storing it electronically. They will also make
copies available to other scholars. (The
Graduate School pays for this service but you must request it.)
- UMI offers additional services as
well. They will register your copyright and provide you with a personal
hardbound copy or microfilm version. (There is an additional charge for
these services that you are required to pay at the time you submit your
thesis/dissertation to the Graduate School.)
- For the best quality personal copies,
have your thesis/dissertation bound by a certified library binder.
- The hardbound copies provided by
UMI/ ProQuest are only 2/3 size, and many photocopy services use soft
covers that will slump on the shelf.
- Since the HS/HSL does not provide
a binding service for personal copies, you will need to contact a commercial bindery. For more information and to locate a bindery, visit http://www.lib.umd.edu/TSD/PRES/thesisbinding.html.
