Q. What is Write-N-Cite?
A. Write-N-Cite allows you to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in your word processor specifically to place references in your document and generate a formatted bibliography. With Write-N-Cite, you can cite references in a manuscript with the click of a button. To download, login to RefWorks, click on Tools, and then Write-N-Cite. Note: Write-N-Cite III now available. Off-campus Write-N-Cite (WNC) users need to make one quick change. After downloading and installing the WNC utility:
- For Windows: Select the Start Button-->Programs-->RefWorks-->WNC Configuration Utility
For Mac: Select Preferences from the Write-N-Cite menu. - Copy and Paste in the following URL:
http://proxy-hs.researchport.umd.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true - Click OK (For Mac: Restart Write-N-Cite)
WNC should now be configured. You will be prompted for your library barcode when WNC starts. See the Guide to using Write-N-Cite for more information.
Q. Why do I have to login again to use Write-N-Cite? I’m already logged in to RefWorks!?
A. Write-N-Cite is a separate, mini-version of RefWorks that works together with Microsoft Word, so it has a separate login. You will notice it does not offer all the options you see in RefWorks, but is mainly used for placing references into your documents and creating bibliographies.
Q. Can I use Write-N-Cite on the Library's computers? Where is it located?
A. Yes, it is an icon on the desktop of the public computers and can also be found when clicking on Programs>RefWorks>Write-N-Cite
Q. Write-N-Cite used to work for me, but now it cannot connect?
A. A newer version of Write-N-Cite might be available. Please try re-installing it to see if this fixes the problem. To install it, login to your RefWorks account, select Write-N-Cite from the Tools menu, and follow the instructions.
Q. Why is it asking me for a group code?
A. You should never need to enter a Group Code in order to access RefWorks or Write-N-Cite. Group codes are used by some institutions to help RefWorks identify a user's affiliation. We are using the library proxy server for all off-campus access to RefWorks and Write-N-Cite. Please use the links on this website to Login to RefWorks from off-campus, since our links are proxy-safe. Alternatively, you can bookmark the following address:

Q. How can I get RefWorks to work with Google Scholar?
A. First, always search Google Scholar from the database list on our web page. This will allow RefWorks to use the library proxy server when you import Scholar references into RefWorks. Additionally, starting from the library web page will mean you also automatically have direct access, both on and off campus, to subscription articles already paid for through the library.
Next, you'll need to set your Google Scholar preferences to enable importing of references into RefWorks:
- Click on Scholar Preferences next to the search box.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the radio button next to Show links to import citations into…
- Make sure is selected in the drop down box.
Q. How do I export citations from a specific database?
A. Different database vendors have different instructions for exporting citations.

Q. When I try to export references from an online database with a RefWorks option, nothing happens. What do I do?

Q. Can I share just a single citation or a few citations with a colleague without inserting them in a word document?
A. You have several options. You can create a separate folder with only those items in it and use the share references option under tools to share the folder. Your colleagues will receive an email with a url to click on to view the folder.
Alternatively, you can check the box next to the references you wish to share and then click the button for "add to my list".
