RefWorks - HS/HSL Troubleshooting Guide

NOTE: Please be advised that Internet Explorer 7 users may experience slowness when using RefWorks. This is due to IE's Phishing Filter (a new feature to IE7) that evaluates web page contents. Download the patch to rectify this from Microsoft.

What is RefShare?

University of Maryland, Baltimore faculty, staff and students now have access to RefShare within their RefWorks databases. RefShare provides RefWorks users with a quick and easy way to share their database (or folders), further enhancing collaborative research. You can now share your RefWorks references with members of your own institution and globally, with any researcher having Internet access.

RefShare Fact Sheet | RefShare Tutorial

Examples of RefShare uses:

  • Post class reading lists on a central Web page
  • Provide easy access to information for disparate researchers collaborating on a project
  • Create and share databases of frequently-requested reference queries by topic
  • Provide a linkable database of research done by specific faculty members
  • Publish an internal database of references for easy sharing within your institution

Special thanks go to the School of Social Work for funding RefShare!

How does RefWorks compare to EndNote & Reference Manager?

RefWorks, EndNote and Reference Manager all help you manage your citations and format your papers or manuscripts. RefWorks has the advantage of being web-based. It is available from any computer with Internet access and is free to UMB students, faculty and staff. Both EndNote and Reference Manager allow for greater customization and include the ability to store and cite images. These programs may be more appropriate for very large scale and complex projects. Citations can be easily exchanged among all three programs, which allows for flexibility.
