The following is a selective list of Internet resources that focus on the interests of the pharmacy profession. The sites have been selected by the HS/HSL liaison to the School of Pharmacy. The selection criteria used to choose the following sites may also be of use to you when evaluating any web site. Associations/Organizations

  • American Council on Pharmaceutical Education
    The national agency for the accreditation of professional degree programs and continuing pharmaceutical education in pharmacy.
  • American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
    National organization representing the interests of pharmaceutical education. The site includes information for faculty and students regarding institutions, government advocacy, and resources in pharmacy education.
  • American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS)
    Professional society serving pharmaceutical scientists in academia, industry, government, and other research institutes. The site includes links to AAPS journals, news, meeting information, products, and affiliated organizations.
  • American Pharmacists Association
    Professional society for pharmacists. The site includes links to consumer information, education and professional development resources, APhA journals, and drug recalls and FDA alerts.
  • American Public Health Association
    The APHA web site provides information on membership, section activities, publications, continuing education, programs, and legislative activities. Links to state and world public health associations and other resources are provided.

    American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists
    Web site for the society serving hospital and health systems pharmacists. It provides access to ASHP member information, practice resources, and products and services. AJHP instructions to authors available with formats for citing references.
  • International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research
    The society promotes the science of pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes research. The web site includes information regarding membership, research, meetings, and publications.
  • Maryland Pharmacists Association
    Professional association for Maryland pharmacists. The site provides membership information and links to continuing education and employment opportunities.
  • Related Pharmacy Organizations
    Extensive listing of pharmacy organizations from AACP.

Board Exams/Licensure Resources

  • Maryland Board of Pharmacy
    Resources include Maryland state license and permit information. The site includes information on legislation, regulation, and filing complaints.
    Disciplinary action notices are also posted.
  • National Association of Boards of Pharmacy
    Provides information on licensing examinations, transfers, updates, and pharmacists' certifications or disciplinary actions.

    • MICROMEDEX
      A collection of twelve databases which support clinical decision-making and high-quality patient care by providing comprehensive drug, acute care, and toxicology information. Updated quarterly. Micromedex® is available free to current faculty, staff and students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and to staff at the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). Through special agreements, School of Pharmacy preceptors may also access the system.

    • Facts & Comparisons
      Facts and Comparisons includes Drug Facts and Comparisons®, Drug Interaction FactsTM, The Review of Natural Products® and Med Facts: Patient Information. Drug Facts and Comparisons is a comprehensive drug information compendium. Drug Interaction Facts includes more than 1,200 interactions monographs detailing possible drug interactions. The Review of Natural Products provides detailed information about natural products; including their botany, history, chemistry, pharmacology, medicinal uses, toxicology, and patient information. Med Facts: Patient Information Hand-outs is designed for patient education, counseling and drug therapy management.

    • Lexi-Comp-Online
      A database collection that provides ready access to drug summaries and identification indexes, drug interaction information, and tools to help you create multilingual patient care leaflets. Whether your subject area is Pharmacy, Cardiology, Dentistry, Mental Health, Nursing, or Oncology, Lexi-Comp Online can help answer your drug information questions. It’s easy to use and the concise drug information makes it an ideal resource for clinical and research settings.

    • Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database
      Contains over 1,000 evidence-based monographs on natural medicines. Compiled by clinicians, these monographs provide in depth information for each natural medicine product. This information, appropriate for patient care situations, includes: common, as well as colloquial names, brand names, scientific names, product uses, safety, effectiveness, description of known constituents, pharmacological actions, adverse reactions, possible interactions, any influence on nutrient levels and depletion in the body after use of the substance(s), dosage and administration, and reference citations.

    • MD Consult
      Provides access to over 30 medical texts, articles from more than 40 clinical journals, practice guidelines, drug information, 2500 patient education handouts, CME and daily medical updates. This resource is available only to faculty, staff and students of the University of Maryland, Baltimore and to staff of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).
    • UpToDate (Available on the UMB campus only.)
      Specifically designed to answer the clinical questions that arise in daily practice and to do so quickly and easily so that it can be used right at the point of care.
    • Pharmacist's Letter
      Pharmacist's Letter
      is a subscription service for pharmacists covering new developments in drug therapy, and trends in pharmacy practice. Pharmacist's Letter started in 1985 and currently serves most pharmacists in the United States and Canada.  The service consists of a monthly letter, plus Detail-Documents available 24 hours a day.
      The Letter gives pharmacists very short concise updates and advice. The Detail-Documents provide in-depth coverage answering many specific questions related to each topic.
    • Biomedical Literature Resources

    • MEDLINE (1966 to present)
      The MEDLINE database from the National Library of Medicine includes citations with abstracts from approximately 3,900 biomedical, dental and nursing journals. MEDLINE encompasses information from Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, International Nursing Index and selected journals. Links to over 80 full-text journals (Journals @ Ovid Full Text) are provided. The database is divided into various year.

  • Free pharmaceutical databases:
    • Antidepressant Drugs Database
      From Corey Nahman.com, the database provides prescribing information for anti-depressant drugs organized alphabetically by brand name.
    • HealthWeb: Databases
      Links to a variety of free databases including resources for pharmaceutical research and toxicology.
    • Johns Hopkins Division of Infectious Diseases Antibiotic Guide
      The site includes an antibiotic database, searchable by diagnosis, drug name, or pathogen. It also offers news, features, and other types of antibiotic information. Free registration required.
    • Toxnet
      Provided by the National Library of Medicine, Toxnet offers a cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous substances, and related areas. Databases include HSDB, IRIS, GENE-TOX, CCRIS, TOXLINE, DART/ETIC, TRI, and ChemIDplus.

    Provides access to medical texts, articles from clinical journals, practice guidelines, drug information, patient education handouts, CME and daily medical updates.
  • Approved Drug Products with Therapeutic Equivalence Evaluations: Orange Book
    The publication identifies drug products approved on the basis of safety and effectiveness by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Basic Pharmacokinetics
    Online textbook for an introductory Creighton University pharmacokinetics course.
  • Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases
    The 6th Edition of The Pink Book is available online in pdf format.
  • National Academies Press
    The National Academies Press publishes reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. Over 2,500 free online books are available.
  • Report on Carcinogens (9th)
    Published by the U.S. Public Health Service, the document provides listings and profiles of known carcinogens.
  • USP DI® Advice for the Patient®
    Provided as part of MEDLINEplus, the guide provides patient information to more than 9,000 prescription and over-the-counter medications provided by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
  • World Health Report
    A yearly report that assesses a specific aspect of world health and makes recommendations for improvement. A summary of the report in all six WHO official languages - English, French Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian - appears on this website, as well as the full version of the report in French.

  • Cytochrome P450 Drug Interaction Table
    This table, developed by the Indiana University Department of Medicine, offers a hypothesis testing, teaching and reference tool for health care providers and researchers interested in drug interactions involving the human cytochrome P450 system.
  • Drug Information Resources: A Guide For Pharmacists
    Provided by the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy, the site provides an organized listing of resources in order to aid pharmacists in providing drug information.
    Information and tutorials for using the Internet are also provided.
  • HealthWeb: Pharmacy and Pharmacology
    Maintained by the Purdue Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences Library, the site provides links to resources on careers, communication, education, online journals, pharmacy practice, reference, research, and associations & foundations.
  • PharmWeb
    Site offers links to career information, meeting notices, discussion forums, educational/research information, patient handouts, government regulatory bodies, and other pharmaceutical directories.
  • Virtual Library Pharmacy
    Comprehensive site offers links to jobs, pharmacy schools, community pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, related databases, conferences, government sites, and other pharmacy related information.
  • Martindale's Health Science Guide: "Virtual" Pharmacy Center
    Comprehensive site from Martindale's Health Science Guide. Includes links to courses, databases, dictionaries, metabolic pathways and genetic maps, pharmacy resources, conferences, calculators, statistics tools, pharmacology and toxicology journals, as well as numerous other tools and guides.

Medication Errors Resources

  • Institute for Safe Medication Practices
    The site provides extensive resources for health professionals and consumers. The website provides information on medications and safety alerts (including textbook errata), error reporting, products and services, self assessment, and news. Links to other resources, a message board, and other contact information is included.
  • MedWatch
    MedWatch provides medical product safety information from the FDA. It also offers a reporting system for health professionals and consumers to submit serious reactions or problems regarding medications or medical devices.
  • National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention
    Web site provides information about the NCC MRP and its recommendations to prevent medication errors. Also included are press releases, links to sites for reporting errors, and other resources for both health professionals and consumers.
  • USP Medication Errors Reporting (MER) Program
    This site allows health professionals to report potential or actual errors to the USP in a confidential manner. The USP will also facilitate anonymous reports to the FDA if desired.

    Searchable Material Safety Data Sheets and Toxic Substances Control Act Chemical Substances inventory databases.
  • Toxicology and Environmental Health
    Sponsored by the National Library of Medicine, this site provides and organizes extensive resources. Links to TOXNET, Internet resources, Haz-Map, ALTBIB, Toxicology Tutor, and consumer health databases are among the resources offered.
  • Vermont Safety Information Resources
    Includes links to the MSDS collection, online library, safety graphics, health and safety consultants directory, and discussion board.
