Medical science and clinical practice are built upon a basic understanding of life sciences. Basic research in fields such as biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology and virology provide the foundations for health science research.

General Life Sciences

    From the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, this biology education site includes virtual labs, animations, a virtual museum and web video of lectures.


  • The Biology Project

    From the University of Arizona, this site is an online, interactive resource for learning biology. Created for students at the college level, it is also useful for medical students, physicians, science writers, and all types of interested people.

  • Life Sciences Dictionary

    The dictionary contains more than 8300 terms dealing with biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, cell biology and genetics.


  • MIT's Biology Hypertextbook

    Divided by chapters, and searchable, this is a complete biology textbook online.

    The Visible Human Project provides transverse CT, MRI and cryosection images of a representative male and female cadaver at an average of one millimeter intervals. This site provides a description of the project and information on how to access the images.

  • American Association of Anatomists (AAA)

    AAA is the professional association for biomedical researchers and educators interested in anatomical form and function. The site provides professional information and links to a variety of anatomy-related resources for researchers, educators, and students.

    From Carnegie Mellon, this site contains tutorials and quizzes that are based on Chime and RasMol images of the molecules and macromolecules found in biochemistry.
