The Historical and Special Collections Department serves as the University of Maryland medical archives documenting the health sciences professional schools on the Baltimore campus. Genealogical and other historical information about the University's medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and social work schools is available. The collection includes college catalogs, yearbooks, and selected primary documents such as matriculation ledgers and administrative minutes dating back to the University of Maryland's nineteenth century origins.
For research assistance, please fill out the Ask a Historical/Special Collections Reference Question form.
The Library's rare book collection also resides in this department. Individual historical collections of chiefly pre-1900 imprints are included, featuring significant works in the health sciences fields. Holdings in the field of social work also are included. Currently there are over 7,000 volumes throughout the collections. The library continues to add new acquisitions as funds and availability of materials permit. Donations of pertinent materials are always welcome. The holdings of the historical book collections are included in CatalogUSMAI.
The Department is located on the Library’s fifth floor.
