Emergency Preparedness Resources
     

Disasters happen whether natural such as hurricanes, tornadoes or floods, or man-made such as chemical spills, house fires or terrorist attacks. It is important to be prepared for emergency situations. In response to the ongoing concerns about emergency preparedness, staff of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) have developed this selected list of web sites to assist consumers and health care providers with planning.




Individual, Family and Community

  • Are You Ready? An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness (Federal Emergency Management Agency)
    Provides a step-by-step approach to disaster preparedness for individual, family, and community preparedness. Other topics covered include evacuation, emergency public shelters, animals in disaster, and information specific to people with disabilities. Also available in Spanish
  • Disaster Information Management Research Center (National Library of Medicine)
    The information resources section of this site links to many topics including coping with disaster, carbon monoxide poisoning and mold. It also links to TOXNET which has 14 databases available on toxicology, toxic chemical releases, & environmental health. All MedlinePlus resources are also available in Spanish
  • Disaster Preparation and Recovery (MedlinePlus: National Library of Medicine)
    Links are provided to a variety of resources on topics including food and water safety, healthy shelter living, pets, financial issues and recovery. Also available in Spanish
  • Disaster Services (American Red Cross)
    Information on a variety of topics including food and water in an emergency, sheltering-in-place and animal safety are provided on this site.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Response (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
    General information about emergency preparedness is provided on the site. It also lists various types of disasters explaining what they are and what you should do to prepare. Also available in other languages including Spanish
  • Ready.gov (US Department of Homeland Security)
    Information provided on this site includes an emergency kit checklist and family emergency plan form. There are also sections for businesses and kids. Also available in Spanish

    Provides links to health-related services and programs within Maryland counties and Baltimore City. There are several ways to look for emergency preparedness information on this site:

      • You will retrieve two web sites that provide information on preparing for an emergency
      • You will also retrieve a list of programs and services throughout Maryland

  • A Resource Guide for Physicians and Other Community Responders (American Medical Association)
    Sections in this guide include: When Disasters Strike, Weather-Related and other Natural Disasters, The Threat of Terrorism, Mass Trauma and Explosive Events, Biological Emergencies, Chemical Emergencies, Radiation Emergencies, and Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Victims, Families, and Responders.

  • Emergency Readiness (American Hospital Association)
    The Resources section on this site provides links to information on topics including Government Roles and Planning
    , Hospital Readiness and Guidance for Health Professionals.

  • Public Health Emergency Preparedness (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality)
    The Tools and Resources section on this site provides links to information on topics including Community Planning, Mass Prophylaxis, Modeling Tools, Pandemic Influenza and Surge Capacity.

  • Radiation Event Medical Management (REMM) (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
    Provides guidance for health care providers, primarily physicians, about clinical diagnosis and treatment during mass casualty radiological/nuclear (rad/nuc) events.
