Librarians of Doom

It's an Opening Reception, Hons! Westminster Hall, on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, was formerly a church and is most famous as the burial site of Edgar Allan Poe. For years, the graveyard was the "in place" to be buried in Baltimore. Many of Baltimore's founding fathers, four mayors, generals from the American Revolution and the rich were laid to rest here. The church, built on a series of brick piers above the tomb, was later constructed without disturbing the graves. This architectural feat created catacombs everyone loves to explore, and distinguished the Hall as a unique architectural landmark. The exterior of the Hall retains its early Gothic Revival appearance and the interior is a blend of the new and old with track lighting, tiered stage, stained glass windows, and a restored 1882 Johnson pipe organ.

Come join your colleagues and friends for an evening of fun, food and frivolity at this historic Baltimore landmark. Tours of the catacombs will be offered with guides providing information on the history of the Hall, the burial ground and Poe. An organist will delight us with spooky music on a lovely October evening and later you can dance the night away with our DJ. In keeping with the gothic theme, please feel free to come dressed in Goth attire: black clothes, hair and makeup. Goth fashion is stereotyped as a dark, sometimes morbid fashion and style of dress. Typical gothic fashion includes dyed black hair, dark eyeliner, black fingernails, black period styled clothing. Styles are often borrowed from the Elizabethan, Victorian or medieval period.
