Max Anderson, MLIS

Max Anderson, MLIS

Max Anderson earned his MLIS in 1999 from Florida State University, where he was named Graduate Student of the Year and was President of the Library School ALA Chapter. Shortly after graduating, he worked as a Public Access Computer Trainer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, delivering training and installing computers in rural libraries across the country. While working with the Gates Foundation, Max became involved with the creation of what became WebJunction, an online portal for libraries. Currently he moderates two discussion boards and serves as an advocate in addition to teaching an introductory course online about the portal for SOLINET. Since 2003, he has worked at SOLINET as an Educational Services Instructor. He writes and teaches classes on various OCLC services, web design, and general technology to librarians around the Southeast. Max has also spoken at various conferences, including Computers in Libraries, SOLINET Users Groups, and state library conferences. Some of his interests include RFID, HTML, Internet Filtering, cataloging, and advocacy and support for libraries.

Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, FACEP (Emeritus)

Georges C. Benjamin is well known in the world of public health as a leader, practitioner and administrator. Benjamin has been the Executive Director of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the nation's oldest and largest organization of public health professionals, since December 2002. He came to that post from his position as secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he played a key role developing Maryland's bioterrorism plan. Benjamin became secretary of the Maryland health department in April 1999, following four years as its deputy secretary for public health services.

Benjamin, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, is a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois College of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a fellow emeritus of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

An established administrator, author and orator, Benjamin started his medical career in 1981 in Tacoma, Washington, where he managed a 72,000-patient visit ambulatory care service as chief of the Acute Illness Clinic at the Madigan Army Medical Center. A few years later, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as chief of emergency medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. After leaving the Army, he chaired the Department of Community Health and Ambulatory Care at the District of Columbia General Hospital. He was promoted to acting commissioner for public health for the District of Columbia and later directed one of the busiest ambulance services in the nation as interim director of the Emergency Ambulatory Bureau of the District of Columbia Fire Department.

At APHA, Benjamin also serves as publisher of the nonprofit's monthly publications, The Nation's Health, the Association's newspaper, and the American Journal of Public Health, the profession’s premier scientific publication. He is the author of over 80 scientific articles and book chapters.

Benjamin is a member of several committees, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director's advisory committee. He also serves on the boards of Research America, Partnership for Prevention and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science.

Michelle Kraft, AHIP

Michelle Kraft, AHIP

Michelle Kraft is the medical librarian at South Pointe Hospital, an osteopathic hospital in the Cleveland area. She is the author of "The Krafty Librarian," a blog for medical librarians. Recently, she published the paper "The Use of Blogs in Medical Libraries," in the Journal of Hospital Librarianship. Previously, she was the electronic resources librarian at the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library. She received her MLS from the University of Missouri–Columbia and is member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, MLA, and the Medical Library Association of Northeastern Ohio.

Chris Olson, MLS, MBA, Principal, Chris Olson Associates, Publisher, Marketing Treasures Newsletter

Chris Olson has been helping information professionals with their marketing plans and communications activities for more than 23 years. She has applied her BA in Art History, MLS and MBA on consulting projects ranging from library service reinventions and brand development, to product portfolio management and web site marketing strategies, to promotion campaigns and logo identity systems.

Over the years she has provided marketing and communications expertise to more than 60 different clients. Chris develops and offers marketing and communications workshops for the OCLC CAPCON office in Washington, D.C. She recently participated in the MLA webcast, "Survival of the Fittest," speaking about communications touchpoints. She is the editor and publisher of Marketing Treasures, the free, electronic newsletter with marketing ideas and resources for information professionals. Her firm also provides free, original library clip art on one of their web sites, libraryclipart.com.

Among her prior clients are: the National Library of Medicine with their product, Grateful Med; the National Cancer Institute and PDQ; the National Network of Libraries of Medicine including the Southeastern Atlantic network office; the Information Service of the Food & Drug Administration; and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) web site team.

In April 2006 Chris and her husband, Todd, moved into their new waterfront dream house overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. There are still piles of unpacked boxes stacked in the attic, but no one is losing sleep over them. Instead, on nice days Chris and Todd, along with their cat, DaVinci, prefer to sit on the back deck overlooking the Bay, soaking up the warm sun while watching the osprey fish for their meals.

Bart Ragon is the assistant director for library technology services and development at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia - Charlottesville. He received a master of library and information science from the University of South Carolina.
