Wireless Access in the HS/HSL

Wi-Fi

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) and Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) have installed a wireless network covering all floors of the Library building. Laptop computer users in the Library no longer have to find an open data jack to connect to the campus network.

What Can I Do/Not Do With It?

  • Connect to the Resources and Services of the HS/HSL or Surf the Web
Anyone who brings a wireless-enabled laptop into the library will be able to access the resources and services of the HS/HSL via his or her installed Web browser. Note: If you want to connect to the full text of articles using the Find It option in HS/HSL databases, you must install a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

For security reasons, you will not be able to use any other TCP/IP application that uses other IP port services (such as Telnet or FTP) or have access to any campus-connected applications or systems.
  • Connect to applications or access services local to the campus
If you need to connect to a campus network outside of the HS/HSL, VPN software needs to be installed on your computer . The campus network's system administrator for that network should be contacted for authentication information.

Installing a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Note: The following information will be needed when installing the VPN. The myUMBID may be known to many employees as their “EmplID” as found on their timesheet. All incoming students are automatically assigned myUMB credentials. If you do not know your myUMB credentials you can use the links below for assistance.
