October is Disability History and Awareness Month

Governor O'Malley has proclaimed October Disability History and Awareness month in Maryland. Staff of the HS/HSL have compiled a guide that provides links to resources about disability awareness and history as well as resources for people with disabilities. New and Improved HS/HSL Guides

The Library is using a new system to create its discipline, subject and course guides. The new guides incorporate RSS feeds, videos, chat and more. Users can also receive email alerts every time a new guide is published. The library has guides on Statistics, Health Policy, Writing and Citing, H1N1 (Swine) Flu and more. Monday - Thursday: 8:00 am -12:00 am*
Friday: 8:00 am -8:00 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sunday: 11:00 am - 12:00 am*

*Building entrance after 8:00 p.m. is limited to current: UMB faculty, staff and students, UMB corporate and borrowing members; UMMC, UPI and VA staff; USMAI faculty, staff and students; JHMI faculty and students. Valid ID required.

Fall 2009 Workshops

The HS/HSL offers many workshops most Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the semester. Some workshops being offered this semester include Creating Effective Presentations Using PowerPoint, RefWorks, Searching the Health Literature, and Journals: Finding Full Text. Registration is free for all UMB Faculty, Students, and Staff. For full course descriptions click here.

In addition to our scheduled workshops we also offer On Demand Workshops. On Demand Workshops are offered to individuals or small groups who cannot make one of our scheduled workshops or would like instruction on a topic that is not part of the regular schedule. HS/HSL on iTunes U

The University of Maryland, Baltimore has launced an iTunes U site. The HS/HSL is part of this site and you can view or download a variety of tutorials on many topics including Creating a RefWorks Account, Keyword Searching in CINAHL, and Medline: Locating the Evidence. Just make sure your computer has iTunes downloaded on it and you can then view tutorials whenever you want or even take them on the go with you on your iPod, iTouch, or iPhone. Public Computer Update: Files Saved on Computers

Later in June, the library will be updating all public computers. When this update is completed any files, documents, pdfs, and images that are saved on public computers will be erased each night. If you are using on of the library's computers please make sure to save your work to a thumb drive or email it to yourself. You will not be able to come back and retrieve files that you have saved the day before. If you have further questions, please contact the Reference Desk at 410-706-7996.

"Learned in Science, Explored in Art" - New Exhibit

From April 9 - June 30, 2009, the Weise Gallery will feature the work of Dr. Wolfgang Ritschel, Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. His vibrant paintings brilliantly combine expressionism and fauvism and explore the world of medicine through visual art. The Library will host a gallery reception and opening on Thursday, April 16 from 4:30 - 6:00 pm.
