The following is a selective list of Internet resources that focus on the interests of the social work profession. The sites have been selected by the HS/HSL liaison to the School of Social Work. Associations/Organizations

  • Alan Guttmacher Institute
    Non-profit organization focused on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis and public education. Site includes three online periodicals, statistical information, issue briefs, reports and recent articles on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

  • American Psychological Association
    The APA's web site.

  • Association of Oncology Social Work
    Site for social workers counseling cancer patients and their families/caregivers.

  • Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law
    Site for mental health law dealing with issues such as fair housing and children. Access to some publications requires a fee.

  • Center for Mental Health Services - Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN)
    Clearinghouse for free information about mental health, including publications, references, and referrals to local and national resources and organizations.

  • Clinical Social Work Associatiion
    Offers legislative updates, congressional contact information, and conference and workshop dates.

  • Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
    Offers accreditation information, abstracts from the Journal of Social Work Education, and links to other social work organizations.

  • HUD User
    An information source for housing and community development researchers and policymakers. It is the primary source for Federal Government reports and information on housing policy and programs, building technology, economic development, urban planning, and other housing-related topics.

  • National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)
    Includes contacts for state and local NAMI affiliates, fact sheets on specific mental illnesses and treatment options, legislative action alerts, and articles on recent research including clinical trials and ethical issues.

  • National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
    Professional organization for social workers with information on advocacy activities, practice issues, credentials, job openings, and continuing education.

  • NASW - Maryland Chapter
    The state chapter of NASW. Get legislative, employment, and licensure information.

  • National Criminal Justice Reference Service
    A federally-sponsored information clearinghouse for research, policy, and practice related to criminal and juvenile justice and drug control.

  • Mental Health America (Formerly National Mental Health Association)
    Includes news releases, legislative alerts, fact sheets, and pamphlets on mental disorders.

  • The New Social Worker Online
    Contains discussion boards, job links, and a long list of social work web sites.

  • Columbia School of Social Work
    Interviewing tips, questions, notes, and critiques from Columbia University's School of Social Work.

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    A nationally recognized source of career information which describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations. Put together by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Social Work and Social Services Jobs Online
    Find social work jobs by location or link to other job databases by topic.
  • SocialService.com
    A site for social workers and other social service professionals to start looking for a social service or social work job in mental health, substance abuse, children and youth, medical social work, criminal justice, domestic violence, counseling, community organizing and outreach, homelessness, and a variety of other areas. Searchable by state. Links to other job sites as well.

    The Diplomate Directory by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. It allows users to verify the BCD status of practitioners.


  • Foundation Finder
    Basic information on approximately 46,000 US foundations. You can search by the name of the foundation and narrow the search to a particular city or state.

  • GuideStar
    A national database of more than 700,000 nonprofit U.S. organizations.

  • NASW Register of Clinical Social Workers
    Search for clinical social workers in the register by name, city, state, and specialty from NASW's web site.

Government Resources - Federal

  • Administration for Children and Families
    Site includes fact sheets on topics such as welfare, child care and Head Start, recent and archived news items, and statistical information on families and children in the United States. Part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Department of Health and Human Services
    The United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of Americans and providing essential human services. Many government agencies related to social work fall within this department.

  • FedWorld Information Network
    A comprehensive central access point for searching, locating, ordering and acquiring government information.

  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
    The federal agency that administers Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program. Includes links to laws, statistics and federal publications regarding the above programs.

  • MedlinePLUS
    Developed by the National Library of Medicine, this consumer-oriented site provides access to extensive information about specific diseases and conditions and also has links to consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health, dictionaries, lists of hospitals and physicians, drug information from the United States Pharmacopeia, and health information in Spanish and other languages.

  • National Institute of Mental Health
    This site offers information on clinical trials, funding opportunities and current research, and is tailored to both consumers and practitioners in the field of mental health.

  • National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
    This site offers information on clinical trials, publications, links to alcohol-related databases, news releases, funding opportunities, referral information, and a frequently asked questions section.

  • National Institute on Drug Abuse
    This site offers information on common drugs of abuse, news releases, online publications, and funding opportunities.

  • Rural Empowerment Zones/ Enterprise Communities Program
    A program operated by three federal departments which provide grant funding, federal tax incentives for businesses, technical assistance, and special consideration grants for poor rural and urban communities.

  • Social Security Online
    Home of the Social Security Administration.

  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
    An agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA provides prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services for substance abuse and mental illnesses. Site contains statistics, funding information, news releases, and links to other government clearinghouses on substance abuse and mental health.

  • THOMAS: Legislative Information
    Administered by the Library of Congress, this site allows users to find information on pending legislation, public laws, Congressional votes, House and Senate committee activity, and more.

  • U.S. Census Bureau
    Facts and figures about the United States. Links to the Statistical Abstract of the United States.

  • Working Partners Substance Abuse Information Database (SAID)
    Database provides information with summaries and full text of materials relating to workplace substance abuse issues. Site administered by the Department of Labor.

    FindLaw's Legal Professionals Channel is designed to help you with your practice-specific legal information needs. Browse the practice area topics for the latest legal news, case law, and analytical articles relevant to your practice.

  • Firstgov
    FirstGov.gov is an easy-to-search, free-access website designed to give you a centralized place to find information from U.S. local, state and federal government agency websites.

  • Guide to Law Online-Law Library of Congress
    The Guide to Law Online, prepared by the Law Library of Congress Public Services Division, is an annotated guide to sources of information on government and law available online. It includes selected links to useful and reliable sites for legal information.

  • Law and Policy Institutions -The Legal and Legislative Resource Center
    Organized and designed with the research needs of legal professionals, law students, consultants, authors, and the public in mind, Law and Policy Institutions Guide serves as a comprehensive repository of legal resources, law articles, legal practice information, as well as legislative and judicial resources for U.S. and international legal professionals.

  • Legal Information Institute
    The Legal Information Institute (LII) is a research and electronic publishing activity of the Cornell Law School. The Institute publishes electronic versions of core materials in numerous areas of the law.

  • Librarians' Internet Index
    A searchable, annotated directory of Internet sources selected evaluated by librarians covering a wide range of subjects.

  • Thomas
    The Thomas legislative information system provides search options for finding bill texts and legislative histories from 1973 (93rd Congress) to the present.

  • Thurgood Marshall Law Library Research Guide to Social Welfare Policy Law
    University of Maryland School of Law Resource Page.

  • U.S. Government Printing Office
    The U.S. Government Printing Office disseminates official information from all three branches of the Federal Government.

    Portal to the United States Senate.

    A clearinghouse of sites regarding child abuse. Includes a searchable database on child abuse organizations, statistical information, various publications, state statutes, and more.

  • National Rehabilitation Information Center
    Contains organizational information, publications, internet links, directories, and a calendar of events on disability and rehabilitation topics.

  • The Internet Drug Index
    Part of the Mental Help Net web site, the psychopharmacology and drug reference section provides information on psychotropic drugs and links to other drug reference sites.

  • Social Work History Station
    Find out about the history of social work.

  • Web of Addictions
    Provides facts, links, contact information, meeting dates, and more for alcohol and other drug addictions.

  • Information for Decision Making
    A clearinghouse for information, policy analysis, and technical assistance on welfare reform.

  • Population Reference Bureau
    Statistics on the U.S. population.

  • Census State Data Centers
    The SDCs are official sources of demographic, economic, and social statistics produced by the Census Bureau. Click on the states you are interested in.

  • ChildStats.gov
    This site contains federal and state statistics and reports on families. Of interest is America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, an annual report which presents 24 key indicators of the well-being of children in the United States including children's economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education.

  • Disability Statistics Center
    The Disability Statistics Center is a national center of research and training in disability statistics. It receives primary funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), part of the Department of Education. Click on Publications
    to access the Disability Statistics Reports, several of which the library owns in print.

  • EconData.Net
    Over 600 links to state and regional socioeconomic data sources, arranged by subject and provider.

  • HS/HSL Statistical Resources
    HS/HSL links to general, population, and subject-specific statistical sites.

  • Kids Count
    Online data from the 2000 Kids Count Data Book which measure the educational, social, economic, and physical well-being of children in the United States as a whole and by individual states.
  • Population Refernce Bureau
    The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) provides information on U.S. and international population trends and their implications. The site links to articles from the PRB publication Population Bulletin (library owns in print), population data sheets, and links to other PRB web sites. The PRB can also be found on the HS/HSL Statistical Resources page.

Tests and Measurements

Tutorials

  • Medline through Ovid (http://www.hshsl.umaryland.edu/services/training/medline/01.html)
    A tutorial on how to use Ovid Medline. Other Ovid databases that operate similarly to Medline and are pertinent to social work are PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, HaPI and CINAHL.
