E-Journals and E-Books

The HS/HSL print and electronic journal collections are available in the library. The e-journal collection may be accessed from computers within the library. The print collection is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the library, in alphabetical order. To detemine if the HS/HSL has a particular journal, go to the Journals web page.

E- journal collections that are free to the public are available at the sites listed below. Please be aware that journal titles in these lists are deleted and new titles added at the discretion of the publishers. 

  • Amedeo-The Medical Literature Guide - You may choose a subset of journals and every week you will receive an e-mail with bibliographical details and links to available abstracts from those particular journals. Some free full text is available.
  • BioMed Central - Publisher of more than 150 peer-reviewed open access journals.
  • DOAJ:Directory of Open Access Journals - The Directory of Open Access Journals covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.
  • FreeMedicalJournals - This site includes access to 1450 medical journals sorted by speciality.
  • High Wire Press - HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of free, full text, peer-reviewed content, with 944 journals and 1,351,576 free, full-text articles online.
  • Internet Scientific Publications - Free full text to 77 electronic journals.
  • Open J-Gate - Open Access to 3000+ journals with links to free and fee full text at publishers sites.
  • Merck Medicus - MerckMedicus offers this multi-faceted Internet medical resource to state-licensed U.S. healthcare professionals. Registration is required.
  • PLoS Public Library of Science - PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.
  • PubMed Central - PubMed Central is an archive of life sciences journal literature that is developed and managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Informatio

Selected Full-Text Journals

  • BMJ - British Medical Journal - BMJ research articles are all Open Access. They are free and full text from the date of publication.
  • JAMA - The Journal of the American Medical Association provides limited full-text access once you registered at their site.
  • The Lancet - Lancet provides free full text to selected articles once you registered at their site.

The HS/HSL print and electronic book collections are available in the library. To detemine if the HS/HSL has a particular book, perform a search in CatalogUSMAI.

E-book collections that are free to the public are available at the sites listed below.

  • Freebooks4Doctors - Access to over 650 books sorted by specialty. Books are in PDF form and are downloadable.
  • The Merck Manual - The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, Seventeenth Edition, is freely available on the web.
  • National Academies Press - The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health, capturing the most authoritative views on important issues in science and health policy. Read more than 3,000 books for free. There are over 900 PDF's available for purchase.
  • Pubmed Bookshelf - A growing collection of online, searchable biomedical textbooks.
  • MedicalStudent.com - A large selection of online medical textbooks and other helpful resources.
