Databases
Over 40 databases are available from workstations within the library. The databases listed below are free to the public. They can be accessed from any computer with internet access:
- Databases from the National Library
of Medicine
- ClinicalTrials.gov
Sponsored by the National Institutes
of Health, this database provides patients and members of the public easy access to
information about the location of clinical trials, their design and purpose,
criteria for participation and additional disease and treatment information.
- NLM
Gateway
Provides a single interface that lets users search multiple retrieval
systems at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The NLM Gateway accesses
MEDLINE/PubMed (includes PREMEDLINE), OLDMEDLINE, LOCATORplus (NLM's online
catalog), AIDS Meeting abstracts, MEDLINEplus (consumer health), HSRProj
(health services research projects), DIRLINE (directory of health organizations),
document delivery through Loansome Doc and the UMLS Metathesaurus.
- PubMed
Provides access to a combined file of MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE, as well
as linking citations to full-text. The full-text option is currently available
for a limited number of journals. If there are any charges for an article,
it is the user's responsibility to pay. PubMed also provides access to
several genome databases.
Note: Anyone can see what the Heatlh Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) owns by setting up the University of Maryland, Baltimore filter in My NCBI; however, this does not provide access to the full text of the HS/HSL e-journals.
- TOXNET
(Toxicology Data Network)
Provides information on
toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. It includes databases
for toxicology data, toxicology literature, toxic release information
and chemical information. It is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine,
through the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program of
its Specialized Information Services Division.

- Ageline
Produced by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), AgeLine is a database containing detailed summaries of publications about older adults and aging. It includes books, journal and magazine articles.
- Agricola
Produced by the National Agricultural Library, this database provides
access to information on all aspects of agriculture and related disciplines,
including plant and animal sciences, entomology, soil and water resources,
and food and nutrition, and animal welfare. The Journal Article Citation
Index covers information from 1979-present.
- Drugbank
The DrugBank database is a unique bioinformatics and cheminformatics resource that combines detailed drug data with comprehensive drug target information. The database contains nearly 4300 drug entries. Additionally, more than 6,000 protein sequences are linked to these drug entries.
- ETOH
(Alcohol and Alcohol Problems
Science Database)
Produced by the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), ETOH covers all aspects
of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. It includes abstracts and bibliographic
references to journal articles, books, dissertations, conference papers
and proceedings, reports and studies, and chapters in edited works. Updated
monthly, ETOH contains research findings from the late 1960s to the present,
as well as historical research literature.

Sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S Department of Education, the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a digital library of education-related resources.
- HighBeam Research
Extensive archive of more than 35 million documents from over 3,000 sources -- a vast collection of articles from leading publications, updated daily and going back as far as 20 years.
- ingenta
Provides access, where available, to the article summaries from over 25,000
publications.
- OT Seeker
OTseeker is a database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy.
- Population Index
Population Index is the primary reference tool to the world's population literature. It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics. This website provides a searchable and browsable database containing 46,035 abstracts of demographic literature published in Population Index in the period 1986-2000. The website is organized in three major sections
- Science.gov
Science.gov is a gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. Government agencies including research and development results.
- Scirus
Scirus is a comprehensive science-specific search engine on the Internet. Scirus searches over 250 million science-specific Web pages
