Circulation Policies
These policies apply to all borrowers
of HS/HSL materials, including faculty, students, and staff.
LOAN PERIOD
RENEWAL
- A book may be renewed up to
three times if not on hold for another patron.
- Call 706-7928 to renew a book.
- The new due date is 28 days from
the date the book is renewed. Be sure to record the new due date and
number of times renewed on the book's due date sticker.
- Overdue books may be renewed.
RECALL
- Recalled books must be returned immediately.
There is a $2.00/day late fee to a maximum of $56.
- If the item is not returned within
seven days of the recall notice date, its replacement cost and a non-refundable
$50 service charge will be assessed.
FINES
- 50 cents per day, per item, to a maximum
of $14.00 per each loan/renewal transaction.
- The fine accrual includes a 50 cent
charge, per item, for the day the item is renewed or returned if overdue.
BILLING
- A book is billed after being
overdue four weeks.
- The billing charge includes the $14.00
maximum fine, a $50.00 service fee, and the cost of the book.
- The book may be returned within 6 months
of payment.
- Billed books should be returned
directly to a Circulation staff member.
- If the book returned is in
an acceptable condition, the cost of the book will be deducted from
the total bill.
- Fines and the $50.00 service fee
will still be charged.
- All bills must be paid within
60 days.
SUSPENSION OF BORROWING PRIVILEGES
- A patron having outstanding
library charges of $50.00 or more will be denied borrowing privileges
until debts fall below $50.00.
COURSE RESERVE BOOK
- Course Reserve books and reprints
circulate in-house for two hours.
- Most reserve materials also circulate
overnight one hour before the library closes to one hour after the library
opens the following day (for UMB students only).
- The overdue fine is $1.00 per hour
or a fraction thereof, per item to a $48 maximum, at that time lost book fees
apply. For details, contact the Circulation Department at 410-706-7995.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- A valid identification badge from one
of the University System of Maryland schools, UMMS, VA Med Ctr( Baltimore)
or HS/HSL library card, with a barcode attached, is needed to borrow books.
This includes regular circulating books and course reserve materials.
- All borrowers must report changes
in name, address, or phone number to the Circulation Desk. Failure to
do so does not cancel obligations.
- Loss of an identification badge
or special borrower's card should be reported immediately.
- All borrowers are responsible
for returning borrowed materials by the dates due without notice from
the library.
- All transactions end 15 minutes
before the library closes.

Misuse, Mutilation or Theft of Library Materials and Violation of Loan
Policies is available upon request.
UMB faculty, students, and staff
who wish to borrow books from other University Systems of Maryland libraries
should first obtain an HS/HSL barcode and a borrower validation form from
the Circulation Desk.
