HS/HSL - In the 21st Century
Vision
The Library is a dynamic institution providing access to digital
and print information, and fostering the life-long learning skills essential
for health and human services professionals to succeed in the information
intense environment of the 21st century.
Mission
The Library is dedicated to supporting the research, education, clinical
care, and service mission of the University.
Blueprint for the 21st Century
Build the digital library collections.
The advent of digitization has profound implications for the library
and how it will acquire, store, and provide access to information. We
must build a critical mass of electronic collections while maintaining
paper and developing the infrastructure supporting delivery to the desktop
of print and image material.
Educate future health and human services professionals in essential
skills to become life-long learners.
As the amount of information and knowledge in the health sciences increases
at an exponential rate, health and human services students and professionals
must develop skills to support life-long learning. The Health Sciences
and Human Services Library plays a leading role in educating current
and future professionals to access and manage the growing body of information
and knowledge.
Deliver scholarly information and knowledge.
The traditional library has been a place people went to for access to
books and knowledge. The new library serves as a gateway to virtual
stacks anywhere in the world. The librarian acts as a guide who evaluates
and points to the resources that provide authoritative information.
Preserve an historical record of scholarly information to serve future
generations.
Access to the continuum of knowledge is important to health and human
services professionals. The Health Sciences and Human Services Library
creates records and access points to collections of this knowledge through
its databases. Traditional records and access mechanisms must continue
to remain powerful, and must evolve into new forms as traditional knowledge
formats give rise to emerging digital ones.
Create an environment conducive to stimulating intellectual pursuits,
encouraging collaborative scholarly endeavors, and supporting personal
reflection.
New learning models emphasize collaboration while the need still exists
for quiet individual study and contemplation. Interdisciplinary research
and clinical care also require places for group discourse. The Health
Sciences and Human Services Library meets these needs by providing a
comfortable, pleasant environment including small group study rooms,
lounge areas and individual carrels.
Serve the community in Maryland and the Region.
The HS/HSL engages in resource sharing and supports the health information
needs of those served by public and academic libraries. The HS/HSL evaluates
health information available on the WWW, providing links to appropriate
sites for consumers and health care professionals.
