Melanie Moran Melanie Moran
Assistant Director for Web Communications, Department of Public Affairs, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee

As assistant director of the Vanderbilt News Service, Melanie Moran directs Vanderbilt University Web communications and oversees media relations for Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education and Human Development and several other university departments.

Moran came to Vanderbilt from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, where her most recent posts were acting director of communication and assistant to then-Governor Don Sundquist for communications.

Since joining Vanderbilt, Melanie has led development of Vanderbilt's online news network, VUCast, oversaw a redesign of the university homepage, implemented iTunes University and made Vanderbilt one of the first universities in the nation with its own branded YouTube channel. Her media relations work has resulted in coverage in national, international and local media including The New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, Reuters, the Associated Press and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Melanie holds a master's degree in public administration from Indiana University and a bachelor's degree in political science from Pennsylvania State University.

YouTube and Universities: Using online video to tell your story

Online video represents the most dramatic development in public relations at universities in the last decade. No longer reliant upon mainstream media to share news about research, events and other university happenings, staff, faculty and staff are now using popular online video sharing sites such as YouTube to tell their stories themselves, and also to bring viewers around the world right into the classroom. This discussion will include an overview of the types of video being produced by universities, the benefits of video for public relations, instruction and recruiting, and also some basic nuts and bolts on how to get started with a branded YouTube channel.

iTunes U and Your U

Apple launched its ambitious iTunes U initiative in the spring of 2007 to expand its music store into higher education. This presentation will review how iTunes U is being used at universities, how to get generate, publish and promote both private and public content in iTunes U, and future directions and policy questions universities are considering when it comes to using iTunes U.
